| Águas de Março
É pau, é pedra, É um caco de vidro, É peroba do campo, É madeira de vento, É o vento ventando, É a chuva chovendo, É o pé, é o chão, É uma ave no céu, É o fundo do poço, É um estrepe, é um prego, É um peixe, é um gesto, É a lenha, é o dia, É o projeto da casa, É um passo, é uma ponte, São as águas de março É uma cobra, é um pau, É um passo, é uma ponte, São as águas de março |
Waters of March A stick, a stone, It's a sliver of glass, The oak when it blooms, The wood of the wind, It's the wind blowing free, And the river bank talks The foot, the ground, A fish, a flash, The bed of the well, A spear, a spike, A truckload of bricks A mile, a must, The plan of the house, Afloat, adrift, And the riverbank talks A stick, a stone, A snake, a stick, A point, a grain, A pin, a needle, A pass in the mountains, And the riverbank talks A stick, a stone, A sliver of glass, And the riverbank talks |
| Note: You will note that the English translation is longer than the original Portuguese version. Jobim added lyrics to the song when it made the transition to English. If you speak Portuguese, you will also notice that some of the English lyrics bear no resemblance to the original lyrics. For example, the beautiful fourth stanza more properly translates to "It is wood that resists the wind, the falls of the riverbank, it's the profound mystery, it's wanting or not wanting." You can find more faithful (but perhaps less lyrical) translations, such as this one or this one. In each case, however, both the original lyrics and translations are flawed. Regarding the original lyrics, trust those offered at the Jobim fan site (which are the ones offered on this page). This translation is a little better, (and you can read about the results of selecting the best Brazilian song of all time ... guess first, of course). Regrettably, no translation can do justice to the original lyrics. You've just got to learn Portuquese |
This Banana Bread came out really good, with one caveat-- make sure you cook it enough, mine was a little moist (probably due to the peach that was added) but not a problem as I liked to toast it! (also, i did not put the bran in nor the wh wheat, b/c didn't have it) moma
Best Banana Bread. Ingredients
3 or 4 really ripe bananas, mashed into a pulp
1 really ripe peach, mashed into a pulp
1/4 cup softened butter
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 sour cream
3/4 cup dark brown sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
1 pinch of salt
1/4 old fashioned rolled oats
3 tablespoons unprocessed bran
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg (fresh if you have it!)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup whole wheat flour Preheat oven to 350 Degrees1.) In a large bowl, mix butter, olive oil, sour cream, mashed bananas, and mashed peach until combined.2.) Add in sugar, eggs, spices, and vanilla extract slowly, stopping to incorporate each ingredient.
3.) Sprinkle the baking soda, baking powder, and salt over the mix and blend.
4.) Next add the oatmeal and bran, followed by the flour, slowly sifting in 1/2 cup at a time until it is all combined.
5.) Pour the mixture into a buttered and floured loaf pan (or four mini pans like I did).6.) Bake for approximately 1 hour (based on your oven) until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.7.) Cool on a rack and serve warm or room temp.
OKAY here's the modified Pumpkin Bread-- which btw came out really good and rose quite a bit in the Bundt pan-- which looks good too!! (I think u can leave out the 1/2C. butterscotch chips)
Pumpkin Bread
20 oz fresh pumpkin (I used white pumpkin--a small one will be less fibrous and better for bread)
4 eggs
2 sticks butter
1 3/4 C white sugar plus 1/2 C brown sugar
3 1/2 all-purpose flour
1/2t. vanilla
1t. baking soda
1t. baking powder
1 1/2t. salt
1/2t. cinnamon
1t. nutmeg
1/4t. ginger
1/2 C. chocolate chips
1C. toasted walnuts
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees (175 C). Grease & flour one Bundt or 3 loaf pans.
2. In a large bowl cream sugars and butter, add eggs and vanilla & beat.
3. In separate bowl, sift flour w/ baking soda, baking powder and salt, & spices.
4. Combine dry ingredients and wet-- mix just until blended (don't over mix will be tough like an overmixed pancake :)
5. Bake for 1hr until toothpick comes out clean. Cool about 15 min in pan then take out and put on rack.
ENJOY!!
Love, moma
